UN3480 and UN3481 enquiries
UN3480 identifies lithium-ion batteries carried on their own. UN3481 covers lithium-ion batteries contained in equipment or packed with equipment. Lithium-metal batteries use UN3090 or UN3091 respectively. Provide the consignor-confirmed classification rather than selecting a number from the product name alone.
EV batteries and large battery packs
For an EV battery movement, include the pack weight and dimensions, condition, handling points and any loading equipment required. Explain whether the battery is new, used, removed from a vehicle, a prototype or being sent for recycling. Vehicle and handling arrangements are confirmed for the specific load.
Damaged, defective, recalled or waste batteries
Disclose damage, defects, recall status, leakage or thermal incidents at the first enquiry. These circumstances can change packaging and carriage requirements. Acceptance cannot be assumed from an ordinary battery transport service, and waste movements need separate checks.
Information for the transport assessment
Send the UN number, proper shipping name, quantity, gross weight, packaging description and available transport documentation. Include the UN 38.3 test summary where relevant. An SDS can support the enquiry but does not replace the required transport document. Any air-freight requirement needs a separate service assessment.
